Greetings, from West Virginia!
You may rightly assume that this Fantastic Friday karaoke song is “Take Me Home, Country Roads.”
Too obvious? Yes.
But, there is no other choice when I spent the entire drive from North Carolina to West Virginia marveling at the splendor of the Appalachian scenery. Breathing it all in, I drove with my window down, winding my way towards a meetup with my sister. My hair looked like a rat nest by the time we were hugging in a hotel parking lot.
She drove three hours just to spend a day with me. We now get to use two hands to count up the visits we have had since we found each other.
I keep ticking off the little first time sister moments, never seeking them out, but deeply grateful when I realize we’re in the middle of one.
Last night we fell asleep beside each other while chit chatting. That was a first.
Today we milled around an unfamiliar town, just going where the wind took us. Another first on the list of normal things sisters do.
Normal things like this add up to make family feel like home.
One day I will lose count of the visits and we will say that we have known each other longer than when we didn’t know each other.
Until then, I’m grateful that the time together is adding up to familiarity and the sense of home together. It’s a dream come true, better than I imagined so long ago when I held hope through the heartache.
Seeing the vintage postcard reminds me of last summer in South Haven when we explored antique stores while you searched for the perfect postcard memento of our writing cohort retreat and shared some of your story. Such a sweet memory!
